San Diego – A series of recent traffic collisions in the San Diego area have resulted in multiple fatalities, prompting local authorities to identify the victims involved. Most notably, 23-year-old Kaya Ray succumbed to her injuries following a crash on a freeway connector on October 6. The incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. as she was traveling from southbound Interstate 5 to eastbound state Route 94. For reasons that remain unclear, Ray’s vehicle veered off the road and struck a tree. She was transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest, where she died two days later, according to the county Medical Examiner’s Office.
In addition to Ray, authorities have publicly identified six other victims from various fatal traffic incidents in the San Diego area. Among them is 61-year-old Celeste Necochea, who was involved in a hit-and-run incident that occurred in the 100 block of Sea World Drive at around 12:30 a.m. last Saturday. Necochea was found deceased approximately 12 hours after the crash, located amid trees beside the roadway. It is believed she was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the incident.
The state has seen a troubling trend in traffic-related deaths recently. On August 29, 38-year-old Javier Oceguera Jr. died when his vehicle veered off Interstate 5, struck a tree, and subsequently caught fire. Another victim, 44-year-old Arturo Flores, was killed on August 28 after his pickup truck overturned on state Route 78 in Ramona. Just a day earlier, on August 24, 62-year-old Maria Mercado Alvarez was struck and killed by multiple vehicles in City Heights. Also on August 24, 24-year-old Miguel Mozo died when his sedan collided with a light pole and overturned in Vista. Earlier in the month, on August 20, 43-year-old Kevin Luis died following a wreck where his pickup truck hit a disabled transit bus after veering off state Route 905.
Additionally, law enforcement responded to a motorcycle crash on the I-15 Express Lanes that involved two vehicles and occurred at 3:33 p.m. on Saturday in the Miramar area. Traffic was stopped at the scene, and an investigation was conducted to locate the motorcycle, which was found at the end of the transition toward the 163 Freeway. The California Highway Patrol report does not specify whether the motorcycle rider was the individual killed in the crash, and no arrests have been reported in connection with that incident.
Authorities continue to urge drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic laws in light of these tragic events. With multiple fatalities occurring in recent months, the focus is on promoting safety on the roads throughout the San Diego area. The community mourns the loss of life while officials look into measures to prevent further incidents.
