San Diego – Tom Fetter, a lifelong resident and prominent figure in the San Diego community, was awarded the esteemed title of Mr. San Diego by the San Diego Rotary Club during a ceremony held at Liberty Station on Thursday. This prestigious recognition was presented by former California Governor Pete Wilson. At 91 years old, Fetter joins a distinguished group of past recipients, including Father Joe Carroll and Malin Burnham, who have made significant contributions to the region.

The Mr./Mrs./Ms. San Diego Award, established in 1952, serves as the highest honor bestowed by the Rotary Club to individuals whose sustained impact has positively affected the San Diego area. Wendy Urushima-Conn, President of the San Diego Rotary, praised Fetter’s exceptional service and described him as a “heart-forward leader” whose efforts have helped shape a better future for thousands of San Diegans.

In acknowledgment of Fetter’s lifelong dedication to community service, Mayor Todd Gloria officially proclaimed October 16 as “Tom Fetter Day” in the City of San Diego. Wendy Urushima-Conn emphasized that Fetter has poured more than 50 years of his life into various nonprofit organizations, including significant roles on the boards of the San Diego History Center, San Diego Zoo, and Fleet Science Center. His contributions have greatly benefited numerous local institutions, influencing the lives of countless residents annually.

Fetter credited much of his success in philanthropy to his wife, Jane Fetter, highlighting her unwavering support and commitment to volunteering throughout their 68 years of marriage. The couple met as high school sweethearts. In his acceptance remarks, he urged others aspiring to make a difference to begin small and maintain dedication to a few organizations, suggesting that true commitment goes beyond simple financial contributions.

Notably resilient, Fetter expressed his intentions to continue his philanthropic work without slowing down, sharing that he considers himself “the luckiest guy in the world.” Born in 1934 at Mercy Hospital in San Diego, he has lived most of his life in the region, specifically growing up in Point Loma. Fetter graduated from Stanford University and later served in the U.S. Army before embarking on a successful career in business.

After completing his military service, Fetter worked for Narmco Industries and subsequently co-founded FGM, Inc., a prosperous car wash equipment manufacturing business. In 1976, he expanded his entrepreneurial endeavors by acquiring Chevron gas stations and further investing in the establishment and sale of additional car washes. His ventures extended beyond business; he was a trustee for The Bishop’s School in La Jolla and played a pivotal role in reorganizing the Junior Sailing Program at the San Diego Yacht Club.

Fetter’s contributions to the San Diego Zoo have been particularly notable, serving as chairman of the Zoo’s Investment Committee, where he successfully increased the investment fund during his tenure. He has also made significant financial contributions to several local institutions, including the University of San Diego School of Law. He and Jane Fetter are proud parents to three children and grandparents to seven grandchildren, valuing their family as their most significant achievement.

The Mr. San Diego award has evolved over the years, initially presented exclusively to men from 1952 to 1991; since then, it has also honored women who have had a meaningful impact on the San Diego community. To celebrate Fetter’s achievement, a special luncheon will be held on October 16 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Liberty Station Events Center, welcoming both members and guests to honor this exceptional community leader.
