San Diego – San Diego State University (SDSU) is preparing to welcome a historic number of students for the 2025-26 academic year. Beginning on Monday, August 25, both SDSU and SDSU Imperial Valley are expected to surpass 40,000 in combined enrollment for the first time, with projections indicating an overall enrollment exceeding 43,000 when including the SDSU Global Campus.

This fall, SDSU is set to welcome more than 6,600 first-year students, which marks an increase from last year’s record of 6,538 first-year enrollments. The competitive admissions process this year saw over 95,000 applicants vying for a place, while the total number of applicants reached more than 123,000.

Although the official enrollment statistics will be confirmed in October 2025 after the Fall Census, current projections signal a significant growth and heightened interest in attending SDSU.

New Programs and Facilities

SDSU is also expanding its academic offerings in anticipation of the increasing student body. Starting in fall 2026, a new Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Human Responsibility will be introduced, with applications available this fall. For current students who may be interested in this new major, they will have the opportunity to switch to it later this semester.

Additionally, a new Special Education minor will be offered, tailored for students pursuing teaching credentials as well as those majoring in fields such as social work, psychology, and speech-language pathology.

SDSU Imperial Valley Growth

SDSU Imperial Valley is also seeing a surge in enrollment, with 371 new students starting classes on August 25, 2025. The campus has opened a state-of-the-art Sciences and Engineering Laboratories facility in Brawley, designed to enhance educational opportunities in STEM fields. This laboratory will be made available to current public health and nursing students for chemistry and biology courses starting in spring 2026.

The SDSU Imperial Valley campus will further bolster its academic offerings by launching undergraduate programs in electrical engineering and chemistry, with the application process open this fall for students who wish to enroll for the fall 2026 academic year.

Background Context

With an array of programs catering to diverse fields and a commitment to expanding its facilities and services, SDSU continues to attract a broad spectrum of applicants from across the nation and around the world.

As the university adjusts to meet the evolving educational needs of its students, the introduction of innovative programs and advanced facilities highlights its readiness to accommodate a larger student body in the years to come.
