The San Diego Coastal Art Studios Tour presented its fifth annual event, inviting visitors to explore the creations of 30 local artists across four homes. This self-guided tour offered an eclectic range of artworks including paintings, jewelry, and sculptures, attracting over 1,200 art enthusiasts last year. With several new artists and studios included, the event continues to enhance community engagement through the celebration of local art.
San Diego hosted the fifth annual San Diego Coastal Art Studios Tour on September 13, showcasing the creations of 30 local artists. The self-guided tour allowed visitors to explore four distinct homes, with two located in Pacific Beach and two in La Jolla, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Guests had the opportunity to view and purchase a broad assortment of artworks including paintings, jewelry, woodwork, pottery, and sculptures. The event featured free street parking at each site, making it accessible for all art admirers. This year’s iteration saw 15 artists participating for the first time, alongside one new studio included in the tour.
Among the new additions was the Chaitlin home, situated at 1670 Bahia Vista in La Jolla. Ann Chaitlin’s studio featured boxes filled with natural materials and colorful jars adorned with hand-painted animal lids. This residence is a late mid-century California ranch, which has been home to Ann and her husband for 50 years.
The tour also spotlighted Leah Higgins’ home at 1686 Los Altos Road, which was designed by renowned architect Irving Gill and was notably the first custom home of horticulturist Kate Sessions. Additionally, visitors were welcomed into the home of Neil and Carla Murray at 1128 Loring Street. Initially purchased in 1994, their residence includes a second-story art studio and a xeriscaped yard that fuels Neil’s inspiration for contemporary portraits.
Dot Renshaw’s home at 1228 Beryl Street, a renovated 1920s Moorish-style residence, features an impressive 18-foot-high art studio. Renshaw’s artwork often echoes her plein air style, taking inspiration from a variety of outdoor environments. The event also highlighted artists like Carol Shamrock and Mieko Anakawa, who are celebrated for their distinctive artistic styles. Shamrock works primarily with watercolor and acrylics, incorporating unique polymer clay pieces into her jewelry-making. Anakawa specializes in vibrant acrylic paintings portraying marine animals, cacti, and succulents.
Artwork prices during the tour ranged from $10 to $5,000, spanning various styles including ceramics, jewelry, paintings, photography, and more. Last year, the tour attracted over 1,200 attendees, emphasizing the growing interest in local art. Organizers have highlighted the wide variety of art and styles showcased in the tour, both ensuring an engaging experience for visitors and promoting local artists.
