San Diego County Braced for Hurricane Priscilla’s Impact

The remnants of Hurricane Priscilla are expected to bring rain, wind, and increased humidity to San Diego County this weekend. Currently, Hurricane Priscilla is a Category 2 hurricane located off the coast of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, moving northward parallel to the Mexican coastline. While it is anticipated to weaken significantly before making landfall along the Baja Peninsula, minor bands of rain and wind are predicted to affect Southern California.

Weather changes are expected to begin early Thursday, as thick bands of clouds will roll in from the south. These clouds will carry tropical moisture, leading to increased humidity throughout the county and triggering scattered showers from Thursday onwards. The bands of rain from Hurricane Priscilla are forecasted to be most intense near local mountain ranges, where some models project rainfall totals could reach up to half an inch.

In coastal and inland areas, the rainfall totals may be lighter compared to the mountainous regions. The tropical weather system will extend into Friday and early Saturday, with continued thick clouds and scattered showers. Rain chances are predicted to peak on Friday, however, there remains uncertainty in forecast models about which day will present the most significant impact. A burst of energy is expected around midday Thursday, producing lighter scattered showers that will likely continue into Friday and early Saturday.

As temperatures are projected to rise through Friday, it will be the warmest and most humid day in the week’s forecast. Following this peak, cooler temperatures are expected as the storm approaches. By Monday, the inland valley temperatures could drop from 84°F (29°C) on Friday to 74°F (23°C), a significant decrease.

Hurricane Priscilla reached winds of 110 mph (175 kph) as it neared Category 3 status on Tuesday. It is currently centered approximately 355 miles (515 kilometers) west of Cabo Corrientes, Mexico, and around 210 miles (340 kilometers) south-southwest of Baja California. In southwestern Mexico, parts may receive up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) of rain, with a risk of flash flooding particularly in the Michoacán and Colima states.

Forecasts predict that Hurricane Priscilla will begin to weaken after Wednesday. Following the storm’s passage, cooler temperatures and more comfortable fall-like weather are expected. The high temperatures in San Diego County next Tuesday are forecasted to be between 75°F to 95°F (24°C to 35°C), depending on the area.

Additionally, the marine layer is expected to become less extensive as restaurants prepare for incoming rain and the lower clouds will not spread as far inland by Wednesday. A significant temperature drop is anticipated next weekend as low pressure may move in from the northwest.

Historically, San Diego has recorded zero rainfall for the month of October, which is typical, as most rain in the area usually occurs between December and March. Should the storm’s surf arrive, it is likely to mainly affect south-facing beaches.

With the full impact of Hurricane Priscilla expected to be felt across San Diego County, residents are advised to stay informed about changing weather conditions, especially as rain and humidity levels rise throughout the weekend.
