San Diego Celebrates Free Ride Day to Promote Public Transit

Crowded San Diego public transit station on Free Ride Day

News Summary

San Diego is gearing up for its sixth annual Free Ride Day, offering free public transport services on October 1. The event, which coincides with California Clean Air Day, aims to boost community engagement with public transit and promote environmental awareness. In previous years, the event has seen significant increases in ridership, with over 340,000 riders participating last year. The initiative encourages the use of sustainable transportation options and includes various transit services like buses, trolleys, and the Coaster.

San Diego is set to celebrate its sixth annual Free Ride Day on Wednesday, October 1, offering free public transit services for the entire day. All options provided by the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) and the North County Transit District (NCTD) will be available at no cost to passengers, encouraging community engagement with public transportation while promoting environmental awareness.

This event has seen an impressive increase in ridership in the past. Last year, over 340,000 riders took advantage of the free services, leading to a double-digit increase in overall ridership for both transit systems. MTS recorded a 15.4% uptick compared to the previous week, with more than 300,000 riders, the highest since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. NCTD’s ridership grew by 28% week-on-week, achieving the highest daily rider count on the Coaster since the pandemic began.

This year’s Free Ride Day coincides with California Clean Air Day, underlining its focus on promoting cleaner air initiatives. NCTD Board Chair Priya Bhat-Patel has emphasized the critical role of public transit in fostering environmental health. The event aims to encourage individuals to consider sustainable transportation options.

Further highlighting the significance of this day, previous year’s event saw approximately 19,000 additional trips taken to and from Petco Park during the San Diego Padres’ wild-card series games. In addition, the Padres will hold a postseason watch party at Petco Park’s Gallagher Square on Free Ride Day, bringing further excitement to the occasion.

Since the introduction of Free Ride Day in 2018, ridership has demonstrated notable spikes, with increases of up to 30% above average weekday levels. Transit officials anticipate a continued boost in ridership this year, as the city seeks to recover from declines associated with the pandemic. Recent transit reports indicate progress towards pre-pandemic ridership figures.

The public transit options available on Free Ride Day will encompass a broad range of services including buses, trolleys, the Coaster, Sprinter trains, BREEZE fixed-route buses, and NCTD+ on-demand services. Such variety allows for convenient access across the region, enhancing the opportunity for residents to participate in this initiative.

In support of Clean Air Day, the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) is encouraging community participation. Residents are invited to pledge to engage in sustainable travel methods, such as walking, biking, carpooling, or utilizing transit services. Participants in the pledge will also have the chance to win a folding e-bike as an incentive to motivate eco-friendly commuting choices.

Recognizing the impact of individual decisions on overall air quality, Coalition for Clean Air CEO Joseph Lyou has advocated for collective awareness and responsibility in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This year’s Free Ride Day embodies this spirit, uniting efforts towards sustainable practices in transportation.

As San Diego moves forward, initiatives like Free Ride Day and California Clean Air Day play a fundamental role in shaping the city’s efforts to promote cleaner air and enhance public transit systems. With the ultimate goal of making sustainable transport a staple in everyday life, city officials remain committed to fostering options that reduce congestion and environmental impact.
