San Diego State women’s soccer players Grace Goins and Kailey Carlen were recognized with weekly awards from the Mountain West Conference, announced on Monday. Goins received the title of Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, while Carlen earned the honors of Freshman of the Week.
The Aztecs women’s soccer team currently holds a record of 4-2-2. The team recently showcased its strong performance, defeating Nevada 4-0 on Thursday and playing to a scoreless draw 0-0 against Hawai’i on Sunday.
Goins had a standout week, starting both matches and playing a total of 180 minutes. She led the Aztec defense, which did not allow any goals, with only five shots on goal faced throughout the week. In addition to her defensive contributions, Goins also attempted a shot during the decisive win over Nevada.
Carlen, also starting both matches and clocking 180 minutes on the field, recorded a stellar performance as well. She saved all three shots on goal against Nevada and successfully stopped both shots on goal from Hawai’i. The Aztecs’ defense has become notably strong, achieving three consecutive shutouts. They have not allowed a goal in 335:12 of play and secured a remarkable five shutouts overall, including four shutouts in the last five matches.
Across six matches against unranked teams, SDSU has allowed only two goals. Notably, they have kept a clean sheet with no goals allowed in five matches against teams that do not receive votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll this season.
This season, Goins and Carlen are among three Aztecs players to receive weekly awards, joining Victoria Miller, who was named Offensive Player of the Week last week. Last season, the team garnered a total of five weekly awards, primarily during two weeks: September 30 and November 2.
The Aztecs are set to begin their final season of Mountain West play. They will open their next match against Grand Canyon at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Following this, the team will return home to face Colorado College at noon on Sunday. Both matches will be broadcasted on the Mountain West Network, with admission being free for the match against Colorado College on Sunday at the SDSU Sports Deck.
