UC San Diego Joins West Coast Conference

UC San Diego athletic teams competing on campus

News Summary

UC San Diego will join the West Coast Conference in 2027, increasing its membership to ten schools. The Tritons will compete in multiple sports, reflecting their commitment to enhancing athletic programs after transitioning to NCAA Division I. The university aims to foster competitiveness with other California schools while also planning for potential increased travel costs. With a focus on successful past performances, UC San Diego’s move signals a significant step in its athletic journey.

La Jolla, California – UC San Diego will officially join the West Coast Conference (WCC) in 2027, expanding its membership to ten schools for the 2027-28 academic year. The Tritons will compete in 14 of the WCC’s 16 sponsored sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, volleyball, baseball, and softball.

UC San Diego currently sponsors a total of 24 sports and is pursuing conference affiliation for the remaining ten sports. The decision to join the WCC indicates the university’s continued commitment to elevating its athletic programs following its transition to NCAA Division I, which was completed in 2024. During this transition, UC San Diego became the first university in NCAA history to qualify both its men’s and women’s basketball teams for the NCAA tournament in their first postseason eligibility year.

The addition of UC San Diego increases the number of California schools in the WCC to eight, fostering a competitive environment in the conference. WCC Commissioner Stu Jackson noted that UC San Diego’s inclusion aligns well with the conference’s goals, highlighting the university’s recent successes and growth.

Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla expressed enthusiasm regarding the move, recognizing it as a key opportunity for Triton scholar-athletes and an avenue to broaden the university’s visibility in major West Coast metropolitan areas. The WCC is currently undergoing several transitions, including plans for Gonzaga to leave for the Pac-12 in 2026, while also welcoming new member Seattle.

Complications surrounding conference realignment are evident, particularly with Grand Canyon rejecting a previous agreement to join the WCC in favor of the Mountain West Conference, which resulted in legal disputes. UC San Diego’s shift from the Big West Conference, characterized primarily by large public universities, marks a significant change in direction for its athletic programs.

The decision process for joining the WCC took about a year, spurred by the formation of a committee to assess the proposal made by the conference. As part of this transition, UC San Diego anticipates paying a notable exit fee to leave the Big West Conference.

In terms of future planning, the WCC aims to continue its expansion and could potentially add another University of California school, likely UC Santa Barbara, to create a Southern California pod within the conference framework. However, financial implications for UC San Diego may include increased travel costs, as its athletic program predominantly relies on student fees to fund operations.

UC San Diego’s athletic director emeritus, Earl Edwards, pointed out the prospect of fostering a new rivalry with the University of San Diego (USD) as an exciting aspect of joining the WCC. Beginning in 2027, UC San Diego and USD will compete against each other in two conference games each season, adding competitive significance to the newly formed rivalry.

The Tritons will face challenges moving forward, including higher travel expenses and increased competition from programs with larger budgets prevalent in the WCC. Moreover, UC San Diego does not sponsor a football program, which has limited its potential conference options, especially given that the WCC does not sponsor football either.

Currently, UC San Diego is in the process of selecting a new athletic director, with an announcement expected soon. The outcome of this decision will play a critical role in guiding the university through its transition into the West Coast Conference.
