San Diego – San Diego State University (SDSU) golfers Chanachon Chokprajakchat and Dylan Oyama have been honored with the prestigious title of 2024-25 Cobalt Golf All-America Scholars, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) on Tuesday. This recognition highlights their prowess not only on the golf course but also in the classroom.

To be considered for the Cobalt Golf All-America Scholar accolade, student-athletes must meet stringent criteria. Eligible candidates must be at least sophomores academically and athletically within NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA programs or be in their final year of athletic eligibility in the NJCAA. They also need to participate in a minimum of 50% of their team’s competitive rounds, maintain a stroke average of under 76.0 in NCAA Division I, and possess a cumulative career GPA of at least 3.2. Furthermore, candidates are expected to display high moral character and maintain good standing at their respective institutions.

Chokprajakchat and Oyama stand out as two of 556 NCAA Division I athletes from 190 schools to receive this esteemed distinction.

Chanachon Chokprajakchat

Chanachon Chokprajakchat has demonstrated exceptional golfing skills, achieving his recognition as a PING All-West Region selection and earning all-Mountain West honors for the first time in the 2024-25 season. He ranked as the third-best golfer on the SDSU team, showcasing a scoring average of 71.24 across 34 rounds. Remarkably, he led the team in three tournaments, including a significant victory at the Western Intercollegiate. Throughout last season, he marked five top-10 finishes and recorded seven even-par rounds in 10 starts. Additionally, Chokprajakchat earned Academic All-Mountain West honors for the spring.

Dylan Oyama

Dylan Oyama has also made a considerable impact, securing his second major academic accolade after being named to the 2025 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team. He has received recognition as a Mountain West Scholar-Athlete as well as a member of the Academic All-MW team for spring. Oyama participated in eight tournaments, playing 14 of 20 rounds with a scoring average of 73.30. His contribution was vital in SDSU’s impressive 23-shot victory at the Mountain West Championship, where he carded a 1-under 71. He also competed in the first round of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional, recognized for being awarded the 2022-23 Mountain West Freshman of the Year and winning the 2023 Mountain West individual title.

Team Achievements and Recognition

Earlier this year, San Diego State secured its fourth consecutive Mountain West championship, showcasing the strength of its golf program. The team finished in a tie for seventh place out of 14 teams at the NCAA Tallahassee Regional, falling just short of advancing to the NCAA Championship. Historically, SDSU has produced notable alumni, such as J.J. Spaun, who won the U.S. Open, as well as other graduates who have achieved significant finishes in major tournaments.

In addition to individual accolades, the San Diego State men’s golf team has also been acknowledged as a 2024-25 PLATFORM Golf Team Academic Award honoree for maintaining a team GPA of at least 3.0. A total of 92 schools were recognized as All-Academic Teams for achieving this academic benchmark. This honor reflects the successful balance of athletics and academics within the program, further highlighting the school’s commitment to excellence in both arenas.
