Thousands of students in the San Diego Unified School District returned to classrooms with new safety measures and academic policies aimed at improving student well-being and creativity. Superintendent Dr. Fabi Bagula emphasized the importance of fostering joy in education, while recent changes include updated mobile phone rules and resources for families facing immigration issues. Despite external challenges, including power outages and financial pressures affecting the community, the school district remains focused on enhancing the educational experience for all students.

San Diego – Thousands of students returned to classrooms in the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) on Monday, August 11, 2025, with new safety measures and policies aimed at creating a better academic environment. This year, a total of 175 schools welcomed back students as the second-largest school district in California continues to focus on enhancing the educational experience while ensuring student well-being.

Superintendent Dr. Fabi Bagula highlighted the district’s commitment to inspiring joy in students, stressing that this goal is essential for productive learning. In a demonstration of SDUSD’s emphasis on creativity in education, Meera Ramanathan, recently named elementary teacher of the year, participates in a nationwide pilot program with the National Elementary Art Honor Society. Ramanathan seeks to connect creativity with classroom learning, encouraging students to explore their artistic talents.

Alongside these educational developments, the district is acutely aware of the challenges that come with external pressures, especially concerning potential ICE raids. In response to community concerns, SDUSD has launched a dedicated web page, “Protecting our Students,” which serves as a resource for families facing immigration issues. Although no confirmed reports of ICE agents on SDUSD campuses have been received, the district has proactively distributed “Know Your Rights” cards to students. Moreover, SDUSD is collaborating with organizations like Jewish Family Service and the Community Law Project to provide additional support for immigrant families.

As part of the new school year, the district has also implemented revised mobile phone rules across all grades, from Transitional Kindergarten to 12th grade. Students are now required to keep their phones off and out of sight during school hours, with the exception of high school students who can use their devices during lunch and passing periods. This policy, approved by the Board of Education, aims to reduce distractions and promote academic performance. Enforcement of the mobile phone policy will follow a progressive disciplinary approach, which may lead to confiscation for repeated violations.

As SDUSD welcomed its students back on a day marked by new beginnings, power outages affecting over 1,000 SDG&E customers in Lemon Grove added an unexpected challenge. A hit-and-run incident that occurred shortly after 3 a.m. involved a vehicle colliding with a power pole, resulting in power disruption for a total of 1,274 customers. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the incident, and repairs were anticipated to restore power by 8:30 a.m. It was also noted that a nearby transformer fire, although alarming, was unrelated to the hit-and-run crash.

In a broader context, national data suggests that financial pressures seem to be impacting many families, with less than 50% of Americans able to cover three months of expenses through adequate savings, according to Bankrate. Additionally, ongoing developments regarding the tragic murder of Dr. Benjamin Harouni have continued to unfold. His parents recently launched LUVLINE dental floss, a project Dr. Harouni was developing prior to his death, while competency hearings for his alleged shooter have faced delays with nine postponements. The next hearing is currently scheduled for August 26, 2025, as the community remains affected by the incident.

In summary, the first day of school for SDUSD brought with it renewed focus on student safety, creativity, and educational performance, as well as underlying issues affecting local families and the community. With new policies in place, the school district aims to navigate the complexities of the current social landscape while fostering an environment conducive to learning and student growth.
