Various sizes of trash containers in a San Diego neighborhood

News Summary

The San Diego City Council has enacted a new Solid Waste Management Fee requiring property owners to choose waste container sizes for trash collection. Approximately 21,000 properties are now ineligible for city trash services, leaving owners to negotiate with private haulers by the upcoming September deadline. Concerns regarding double charging and service gaps persist, while private haulers struggle to meet increased demand. The city is offering assistance to residents during this transition, including FAQs and a customer support hotline, as they adapt to this new waste management system.

San Diego – In an unprecedented shift, the San Diego City Council has approved a new Solid Waste Management Fee, making it necessary for property owners to select waste container sizes for their trash collection. This new policy has resulted in approximately 21,000 properties being deemed ineligible for city-provided trash service, leaving property owners with the challenge of negotiating waste pickup agreements with private haulers by a September 1 deadline.

As of now, about 20% of these properties have been able to secure new services, leading to concerns over potential service gaps for the remaining owners. There has been considerable frustration among residents, with many expressing discontent over the issue of double charging, as they are still currently paying for trash service through property taxes.

As the transition unfolds, reports from property managers indicate that private haulers are struggling to keep up with the surge in demand. Many have encountered delays, refusals, or have been placed on waiting lists, complicating the process for affected property owners. In addition, the costs associated with private service are often found to be significantly higher than the previous city-operated model, adding to the economic strain for those affected.

The city has acknowledged that some properties may face additional challenges, such as a lack of space for dumpsters or issues with truck access for waste hauling. In light of these difficulties, city officials have assured property owners that service will not be interrupted as long as they are actively working to secure a private hauler.

To assist residents through this transition, the city has implemented a FAQ section and established a customer support hotline to help navigate the registration process and container size selections. Options for trash containers include 35-gallon, 65-gallon, and the standard 95-gallon sizes, with monthly rates varying according to the selected container size.

In efforts to provide financial support amidst rising costs, the city is developing a financial assistance program aimed at qualifying residents. Furthermore, it is important to note that current trash bins utilized by property owners cannot be kept; they will be collected for recycling to produce new containers. New trash bin deliveries are scheduled to commence between October 2025 and June 2026.

As San Diego makes this transition to private trash services, many property owners are experiencing confusion regarding registration and the selection of appropriate bin sizes. The city has recognized the rollout’s challenges and continues to encourage property owners to seek help when needed. The aim is to maintain reliable trash collection services for all residents during this significant change.

In summary, as the deadline approaches, San Diego property owners must take urgent action to ensure continued trash service while navigating the complications of this new privatized waste management system. With directives in place and support channels available, the city strives to provide clarity and assistance to its residents as they adjust to the new requirements.
