A driver was arrested after a standoff with California Highway Patrol on northbound I-15 in Pala Mesa. Pala Mesa, California – A driver is in custody following a lengthy standoff with California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers on Sunday morning. The incident transpired on northbound Interstate 15, resulting in a temporary closure of all lanes in the area.
CHP received a call at approximately 10:15 a.m. reporting a stolen vehicle taken from the Clairemont Recreation Center located in San Diego. Officers swiftly tracked the stolen vehicle, leading them to the northbound lanes of I-15 shortly after the initial report.
In response to the situation, officers executed a “high-risk” traffic stop, which necessitated the closure of all northbound lanes just north of Highway 76 for safety reasons. The driver, however, was uncooperative and refused to exit the vehicle, prompting a standoff.
Law enforcement officials attempted various methods to resolve the standoff peacefully. Officers approached the vehicle and utilized pepper balls as a means to encourage the driver to cooperate. After some time, the driver eventually exited the vehicle and ran towards the officers, who were then able to apprehend him.
The driver was subsequently transported to a hospital to receive treatment for the effects of the chemical irritant employed during the apprehension process. The incident was resolved, and northbound lanes of the freeway were reopened around 11:30 a.m., allowing traffic to resume its normal flow.
