Santee

A deputy-involved shooting during a SWAT standoff in Santee on Sunday evening has left the suspect dead. The standoff, which began around noon and concluded near 7 p.m., unfolded following reports of threats made by a man with a weapon.

Initially, San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 9000 block of Willowgrove Avenue after receiving multiple reports from neighborhood victims who claimed they had been threatened with a firearm. The situation escalated when the suspect moved to a different residence four doors down while still armed.

Efforts to contact the suspect via phone for negotiation purposes were futile, as he did not engage with law enforcement. Consequently, SWAT and negotiation teams were deployed to the scene in an attempt to de-escalate the standoff. During this tense period, gunfire could be heard coming from within the residence, indicating a potential escalated threat.

Authorities utilized a drone to confirm the suspect’s presence in the home. In a bid to compel him to exit, gas was deployed into the residence. The suspect eventually exited the home and fired multiple rounds at the deputies, prompting two deputies to return fire, resulting in the suspect’s death. Remarkably, no other individuals were reported injured during this incident.

The identity of the deceased suspect has yet to be disclosed, as authorities are in the process of notifying his next of kin. In the aftermath of the shooting, the area around Willowgrove Avenue and Carlton Hills Boulevard remains under road closures due to ongoing police activity.

The incident is now under investigation by the San Diego Police Department, following the parameters established by a Countywide Memorandum of Agreement (MOU) which governs how investigations into police-involved shootings are conducted. This agreement aims to ensure transparency and accountability by stipulating that the Sheriff’s Office will investigate incidents involving officers from the San Diego Police Department and vice versa.

As investigations into such incidents can take several months to complete, findings will ultimately be reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office to determine whether any laws were violated during the incident.

Key Timeline of Events:

  • 12 p.m.: Standoff begins with reports of a man making threats with a firearm.
  • 2 p.m.: Suspect reportedly moves to a new residence four doors down.
  • 6 p.m.: Gas deployed into the residence in an effort to force the suspect to surrender.
  • 6:30 p.m.: Suspect exits the home and fires at deputies, who return fire.
  • 7 p.m.: Standoff concludes; suspect pronounced dead at the scene.

This incident continues to raise questions around community safety and the role of law enforcement in handling high-risk situations. Authorities urge the public to remain patient as they work to ensure a thorough investigation is carried out.
