Attendees enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of Comic-Con San Diego.
San Diego is set to host Comic-Con International, a major pop culture event expected to attract about 135,000 attendees and generate over $160 million for the local economy. This year’s highlights include the debut of ‘Batman Azteca: Clash of Empires,’ along with engaging panels for various popular franchises. HBO’s immersive ‘Peacefest’ and educational initiatives from the San Diego Public Library also contribute to the convention’s dynamic atmosphere. Local officials emphasize Comic-Con’s importance for the city’s culture and economic landscape, cementing its long-standing presence since 1970.
San Diego is abuzz with excitement as it hosts Comic-Con International 2025, a cornerstone event in the pop culture calendar that promises a diverse array of exhibits, celebrity panels, and interactive experiences. The convention, which is expected to draw around 135,000 attendees, is estimated to generate an economic impact exceeding $160 million for the city, significantly benefiting local businesses and services.
This year’s highlight is the debut of “Batman Azteca: Clash of Empires,” an animated series that reimagines Batman’s origin within the context of Aztec history. Set to premiere on HBO on September 18, the story centers on a young Bruce Wayne, who seeks refuge in Tenochtitlan after witnessing the tragic death of his family at the hands of Spanish conquistadors. The character of the Joker is voiced by actor Raymond Cruz, who takes on the role of a high priest and advisor to Montezuma, enhancing the narrative’s cultural depth.
In support of the series, voice actor Horacio Rojas, who portrays Batman, has shared insights about the significance of Latin representation in popular culture, underscoring the importance of diverse storytelling in media.
Comic-Con 2025 features a variety of engaging panels in Hall H, including discussions centered around “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” comedy performances by renowned comedians Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias and Jo Koy, as well as a retrospective panel celebrating the 20th Anniversary of “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” The panels offer attendees a chance to delve deeper into their favorite characters and stories.
In addition to the traditional programming, HBO has created an immersive fan experience called Peacefest at the Nova San Diego Night Club. This event is inspired by the hit show “Peacemaker,” featuring attractions like the “Quantum Unfolding Chamber” and special meet-and-greet opportunities with the character Eagly.
The San Diego Public Library is also playing a role in Comic-Con this year, providing limited-edition Comic-Con library cards and offering free panels on comics education, broadening the convention’s appeal by discussing the art and impact of comics.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, alongside local officials, welcomed attendees and emphasized the cultural and economic significance of Comic-Con for the city. The event has long been a catalyst for hotel and sales tax revenue, contributing to municipal services and local infrastructure. Last year alone, Comic-Con attracted over 135,000 attendees, resulting in $3 million in local tax revenue.
Covering more than 460,000 square feet of exhibit space, Comic-Con features over 1,000 exhibitors and provides participants with more than 2,000 hours of panels and events. As the largest comic book and pop culture convention in the world, the event spans a wide array of themes and activities that appeal to diverse fan bases.
The inclusion of “Batman Azteca” within the lineup signifies a commitment to innovative character interpretations, demonstrating how storytelling can evolve within established genres. Additional highlights include the panel for the eagerly anticipated “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” sequel, which promises new animatronics and cast insights, as well as discussions on the reboot of “Toxic Avenger.”
Celebrities set to attend the convention include notable figures such as George Lucas and Elle Fanning, with Lucas making his Comic-Con debut to discuss his new Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. Although major studios like Marvel are notably absent this year, Comic-Con International 2025 still showcases a robust and varied lineup of programming, ensuring that fans leave with memorable experiences.
Comic-Con has been a staple of San Diego’s cultural landscape nearly every year since 1970, and organizers have pledged to keep the convention in the city through 2027, solidifying its role as a vital component of San Diego’s identity.
