San Diego – A tragic series of accidents in the San Diego region over the weekend has left five people dead, including a father and son, and several others injured. The incidents highlight ongoing concerns about road safety in the area.
On Saturday, July 22, 2025, at approximately 6:45 p.m., a three-vehicle collision occurred near Rancho San Diego on Dehesa Road, east of Sloan Canyon Road. A 60-year-old woman from El Cajon was driving a Nissan Sentra westbound when she crossed over double-yellow lines into eastbound traffic, colliding head-on with a Honda Pilot. After the initial impact, she lost control and crashed into a Ford F-150. The force of the collision caused the F-150 to flip over onto the roadway.
The driver of the Nissan Sentra died at the scene and has not yet been identified. Two other drivers, one in the Honda Pilot and the other in the Ford F-150, along with a passenger in the F-150, sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating the accident, emphasizing the critical importance of maintaining one’s lane while driving. It remains uncertain whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
In a separate incident occurring just a day earlier on July 21, 2025, five fatalities were reported in a crash on State Route 67 in Poway. Among those killed were 32-year-old Emmanuel Rivera Abarca and his father, 59-year-old Marcial Rivera Solorio. The collision took place around 12:30 p.m. between Poway Road and Scripps Poway Parkway, resulting in one vehicle going off the road into a ravine, which subsequently ignited a brush fire that was later extinguished.
The family of Rivera Abarca described the deceased as loving and hardworking individuals who dedicated their lives to their family. Emma Gomez, Rivera Abarca’s girlfriend, learned about the incident via an online post and hurried to the scene upon recognizing the car’s license plate. Witnesses reported that the crash involved severe impacts, leading to widespread devastation.
Regina Abarca, the mother of Rivera Abarca, expressed profound grief over the loss of her husband and son, emphasizing their deep commitment and love for their family. As investigations proceed, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is reviewing video footage from the area to determine the cause of the accident.
The tragedies have prompted family members of the victims to call for improved road safety measures in the region, advocating for changes such as the installation of concrete medians to prevent similar fatal accidents in the future. These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for community awareness and advocacy for safer driving conditions.
Local authorities are determined to address these concerns amid rising traffic accidents and encourage efforts to enhance road infrastructure. The recent events underscore a need for collective action to prevent further tragedies on San Diego’s roadways.
