GCU athletes showcasing talent in the Mountain West Conference.
Grand Canyon University (GCU) has announced its immediate membership in the Mountain West Conference (MW), allowing it to compete in championships and NCAA tournaments starting this fall. This change occurs three years ahead of the original timeline, reflecting GCU’s ambition to elevate its athletics program. The university’s addition to the MW promises a new competitive era, not just for GCU but also for the MW, as it prepares student-athletes for more competitive opportunities amidst ongoing discussions about Title IX and equity in collegiate sports.
Phoenix, Arizona – Grand Canyon University (GCU) will join the Mountain West Conference (MW) immediately, allowing them to compete for conference championships and NCAA postseason eligibility starting this fall. This move comes three years ahead of schedule, as GCU was initially slated to join the MW on July 1, 2026. The immediate integration into the conference signals a significant shift for GCU’s athletics, which can now showcase its talents in a new competitive landscape.
The MW Commissioner has expressed that GCU’s addition is beneficial not only for GCU student-athletes but also for the Mountain West Conference as a whole. GCU will participate in 17 sports sponsored by the MW, which includes a variety of men’s and women’s competitions such as basketball, soccer, and track and field.
In preparation for this transition, GCU recently concluded a successful season in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), clinching its fifth consecutive WAC Commissioner’s Cup. The men’s and women’s basketball teams had an impressive combined record of 58-11 in the 2024-25 season, with both squads winning their respective conference tournament championships and securing spots in the NCAA Tournament.
This announcement arrives amid discussions surrounding Title IX, particularly concerning the treatment of female athletes across various collegiate programs. A notable case involves female athletes at Stephen F. Austin University (SFA), who filed a federal lawsuit challenging their school’s decision to eliminate women’s beach volleyball, bowling, and golf teams. The lawsuit, which carries the weight of being a significant Title IX class action case, raises substantial concerns regarding the future of women’s sports, especially in light of budget cuts being implemented by educational institutions.
SFA athletes were reportedly given less than a day’s notice concerning the discontinuation of their programs, provoking backlash regarding the school’s communication practices and its adherence to Title IX guidelines. An attorney specializing in Title IX, representing the SFA athletes, has indicated that the university was already out of compliance with Title IX prior to the team cuts.
San Diego State University (SDSU) is now facing scrutiny regarding the stability of its athletic programs, especially in reference to the ongoing situation at SFA. Concerns have emerged about possible program reductions at SDSU, prompting inquiries into how the university is addressing equitable participation opportunities for female athletes—an essential component of Title IX.
Despite these concerns, SDSU asserts that equitable participation opportunities in alignment with Title IX is a foundational aspect of its athletics program. However, efforts to seek clarity from SDSU regarding the security of its athletic initiatives have yielded ambiguous responses, further intensifying worries about the university’s commitment to Title IX compliance.
The legal challenges surrounding SFA have coincided with larger discussions about uncertainties in collegiate athletics, particularly regarding the financial ramifications stemming from new NCAA changes. The integration of GCU into the Mountain West not only elevates its collegiate sports but also adds pressure on nearby institutions to prioritize compliance and equity in their athletic departments.
As GCU joins the MW, the total number of universities in the conference will increase to 14 for the 2025-26 academic year. Other schools are also contemplating modifications to their athletic programs, indicating a broader trend of growth and adjustment within collegiate sports as universities adapt to new policies and challenges.
GCU President Brian Mueller has expressed gratitude for the opportunity to join the Mountain West, emphasizing the university’s growth trajectory and dedication to achieving athletic success within this new competitive environment.
