News Summary

San Diego has launched an interactive website for residents to choose the size of their new trash bins as part of a new waste management initiative. Residents can select from three options: 95-gallon, 65-gallon, or 35-gallon. Mailers with unique codes will be sent to each household to access the site, with the default size set to 95-gallon for those who don’t make a selection. A 30-day grace period will allow residents to switch sizes once bins are delivered. The program aims to modernize waste management and enhance efficiency.

San Diego has launched an interactive website to help residents select the size of their new household trash bins ahead of an anticipated service rollout. The initiative, which commenced on Tuesday, allows residents to choose between three bin sizes: 95-gallon, 65-gallon, or 35-gallon.

Starting today, mailers will be sent to all residents containing unique codes specific to each property. These codes will enable residents to access the new website and make their bin selections. If a resident does not make a selection by the end of September, they will automatically receive a 95-gallon bin, which will be the default size.

Residents will have a grace period of 30 days after receiving their initial trash bin to switch to a smaller size if they desire. Additionally, if they require additional recycling bins, they can request them for an extra fee. Residents will notice the trash service fee reflected on their county tax roll beginning this fall, which will be payable in two installments. The fee is structured as a monthly rate that is billed annually.

The delivery of the new trash and recycling bins is expected to start in October. While residents can currently select 35-gallon and 65-gallon bins online, the city does not yet have these sizes available. Therefore, all residents will initially be charged for a 95-gallon bin. However, a credit will be applied to the following year’s bill for those who later choose the smaller sizes within the 30-day grace period after their bins are delivered.

To assist residents with any inquiries or requests, the city has set up an email address: trash@sandiego.gov, and a phone number: 858-694-7000 for dedicated support. This effort is part of a recent at City Council meeting where a significant and often controversial plan was approved to replace nearly 750,000 trash and recycling containers at an estimated cost of $65 million.

The new bins will feature advanced tracking chips designed to enhance accountability and improve service reliability for residents. The bins will be distinguishable by color, with trash bins being light gray and recycling bins light blue, replacing the existing color scheme.

Concerns have arisen surrounding the environmental implications and increased costs associated with the bin replacements, raising questions among critics about the project’s sustainability and affordability.

It is important for residents to complete their bin size selection by the end of September to ensure they receive their preferred size in a timely manner. The city has positioned this new service as a step forward in modernizing their waste management and improving community services.

In summary, the launch of this website marks a significant move towards enhancing waste collection efficiency and providing residents with greater control over their waste management preferences. Residents are encouraged to be proactive in making their choices as part of this community initiative.
