New San Diego State Aztecs football uniforms

News Summary

The San Diego State Aztecs showcased new football uniforms designed to enhance team branding for the upcoming season. The prominent SDSU logo and Aztec calendar are now highlighted, while the traditional helmet remains unchanged. A fresh aesthetic with red collars and a new away jersey setup marks a significant departure from previous designs. The changes reflect a broader trend in college athletics towards a strong team identity as SDSU prepares for its final season in the Mountain West Conference before transitioning to the Pac-12 in 2026.

San Diego – The San Diego State Aztecs revealed their new football uniforms on social media on Monday, showcasing significant design changes ahead of the 2023 season. This development marks a shift towards an elite branding approach, as the team removes the words “SAN DIEGO STATE” from above the jersey number, allowing the iconic SDSU logo and Aztec calendar to stand out on their own.

The traditional red SDSU helmet featuring the Aztec calendar remains unchanged, preserving a classic element of the team’s identity. The Aztec calendar is also reintroduced as a decorative feature on the shoulders of the jerseys and in the piping down the sides of the pants. Both the home and away jerseys will sport a new red collar, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal of the uniforms.

In a shift to their away game strategy, the Aztecs now have the option to wear white jerseys with white pants on the road, a notable departure from the previous combination of white jerseys paired with black pants. This marks the first time since the 2013 season that SDSU will don a white-on-white uniform setup.

To showcase the new designs, offensive lineman Ross Ulugalu-Maseuli modeled the black uniform, while cornerback Chris Johnson presented the white uniform in their social media posts. Both players are set to represent San Diego State at the upcoming Mountain West football media days in Las Vegas, where two players from each Mountain West school will be in attendance. SDSU’s head coach, Sean Lewis, will also participate, joining the 11 other conference coaches at this event.

As the Aztecs gear up for the upcoming season, they are scheduled to open fall camp in two weeks. The 2023 season kicks off against Stony Brook on August 28 at Snapdragon Stadium, marking a critical point for the team as they prepare to engage in competitive gameplay.

This upcoming season is particularly notable for the Aztecs as it represents their final year in the Mountain West Conference. Starting in 2026, San Diego State will transition to the reconstituted Pac-12, which is expected to bring new challenges and opportunities for the program.

These uniform changes coincide with a broader movement in college athletics toward branding that emphasizes team identity and heritage. By centering their designs around recognizable symbols like the Aztec calendar, SDSU aims to foster a distinct brand that resonates with fans and players alike.

The Aztecs have a history of strong performances and dedicated fan support, and these new uniforms reflect their commitment to maintaining a competitive edge both on the field and in the eyes of their supporters. As they approach a new season with fresh designs and strategic changes, the Aztecs are hopeful for a successful campaign ahead while finding their place within a new conference structure.
