San Diego – The San Diego City Council has approved an allocation of nearly $7.9 million for improvements across eleven parks, utilizing funds from a settlement agreement with SeaWorld related to unpaid lease payments. This decision marks a significant step towards enhancing park facilities and services for residents and visitors.
The funds are part of a broader settlement totaling $8.5 million that was reached in January 2025, stemming from a dispute over past lease obligations that date back to 2020. Following this agreement, approximately $560,000 was immediately allocated to mitigate revenue shortfalls in prior fiscal years, ensuring that essential park services could continue without interruption.
Among the key projects receiving funding, $3.6 million will be directed towards upgrading restrooms and playgrounds at Ocean Beach’s Robb Field, with construction set to commence in 2024. This location, among others, will serve as a pivotal point for families and community gatherings, enhancing the overall park experience.
Additional projects financed by the allocated funds include essential repair work in La Jolla, accessibility enhancements in Mountain View, and restoration efforts for historical facilities in Rancho Peñasquitos. Specifically, nearly $2.8 million will be designated for various projects under the San Diego Regional Park Improvement Fund, further underscoring the city’s commitment to improving public spaces.
