San Diego – The San Diego City Council has approved an allocation of nearly $7.9 million for improvements across eleven parks, utilizing funds from a settlement agreement with SeaWorld related to unpaid lease payments. This decision marks a significant step towards enhancing park facilities and services for residents and visitors.

The funds are part of a broader settlement totaling $8.5 million that was reached in January 2025, stemming from a dispute over past lease obligations that date back to 2020. Following this agreement, approximately $560,000 was immediately allocated to mitigate revenue shortfalls in prior fiscal years, ensuring that essential park services could continue without interruption.

Among the key projects receiving funding, $3.6 million will be directed towards upgrading restrooms and playgrounds at Ocean Beach’s Robb Field, with construction set to commence in 2024. This location, among others, will serve as a pivotal point for families and community gatherings, enhancing the overall park experience.

Additional projects financed by the allocated funds include essential repair work in La Jolla, accessibility enhancements in Mountain View, and restoration efforts for historical facilities in Rancho Peñasquitos. Specifically, nearly $2.8 million will be designated for various projects under the San Diego Regional Park Improvement Fund, further underscoring the city’s commitment to improving public spaces.

Mission Bay is also in line for considerable enhancements through this funding. The allocation includes $235,000 for improvements to the South De Anza basketball courts and parking lot, with anticipated construction starting in July 2025. Furthermore, $719,629 will be used to upgrade the restroom, playground, and parking areas at Dusty Rhodes Park, with construction scheduled to begin in January 2026.

Other notable projects funded through the San Diego Regional Park Improvement Fund encompass:

  • Restroom upgrades at Organ Pavilion, Spanish Village, and Morley Field in Balboa Park.
  • Electrical service enhancements at Chollas Lake.
  • Replacement of damaged wooden pier piles on Crystal Pier.
  • Sidewalk repairs at Ellen Browning Scripps Park.
  • Restoration of the historic barn at the Rancho Peñasquitos Equestrian Center.
  • ADA accessibility improvements at the Mountain View sports courts.
  • Park enhancements at the West Sycamore Staging Area.

These initiatives were selected based on their readiness for construction and the expected benefits they will bring to the community. The City Council’s approval reflects an ongoing commitment to rejuvenating San Diego’s parks and recreational facilities.

Mayor Todd Gloria has emphasized the critical importance of these updates, stating that they will significantly contribute to making parks in the area cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable for everyone. Such improvements are essential not only for the aesthetic enhancement of the parks but also for fostering community participation and engagement through improved public spaces.

The City of San Diego continues to seek innovative ways to utilize resources effectively, ensuring that public amenities can meet the diverse needs of its growing population. The approved allocation promotes future readiness and sustains ongoing park enhancements, vital for an active and engaged community.
