San Diego City Council members convene to discuss important topics.
The San Diego City Council has approved a $146,000 settlement for former COO Eric Dargan after his termination amid discrimination claims. The council voted 6-3 to resolve a lawsuit filed by Dargan, who alleged breach of contract. His dismissal, initially termed a layoff, drew controversy as Mayor Gloria later stated it was for cause. The settlement raises questions about city management practices and the handling of legal disputes regarding workplace issues and racial equity.
San Diego – The San Diego City Council has approved a settlement of $146,000 for former Chief Operating Officer Eric Dargan, following his termination earlier this year amid discrimination claims. This decision marks the conclusion of a contentious phase for city leadership, which has seen both legal challenges and debates about management practices.
The council voted 6-3 in favor of the settlement, which is intended to resolve a lawsuit Dargan filed in March after his abrupt dismissal in February. Initially, the termination was described by the mayor’s office as a layoff in response to cost-cutting measures, with the role of COO to be absorbed into the mayor’s office. However, Mayor Todd Gloria later stated that Dargan was fired for cause, which eliminated any obligation to provide severance pay.
Dargan’s lawsuit sought $120,000, alleging breach of contract due to his expectation of three months of severance pay. Ultimately, the settlement agreed upon exceeds this amount, leading to further discussion among council members regarding the appropriateness of the payout. Council Members Marni von Wilpert and Raul Campillo opposed the settlement during the vote, citing a lack of evidence to support Dargan’s claims.
The case against Dargan involved serious allegations, including discrimination related to his identity as a Black man and claims that he was unprofessional in council meetings, including rumors of him falling asleep during sessions. The complexity of the situation highlighted issues of racial equity and workplace dynamics within city management.
In a related matter, during a recent city council meeting, Councilman Henry Foster III voiced criticism towards Mayor Gloria’s handling of the city’s operations, suggesting that he might be ill-prepared for managing the day-to-day functions of the city. This criticism coincided with the council’s decision to maintain the COO position within the executive structure, following a controversial veto from Mayor Gloria.
Local activist Shane Harris has expressed concerns regarding the mayor’s ability to navigate the city’s budget crisis effectively. In response, Mayor Gloria has defended his leadership, emphasizing the necessity of fiscal responsibility and highlighting that the city’s budget decisions must safeguard its financial stability.
The $146,000 settlement for Dargan will be sourced from a public liability fund, indicating the city’s approach to addressing potential legal liabilities arising from employment disputes. The situation encapsulates ongoing tensions between city leadership and public accountability, particularly regarding issues of diversity and management capabilities.
This settlement concludes a series of complicated discussions surrounding Dargan’s controversial exit and raises questions about the direction of city leadership. Going forward, it remains to be seen how the city council will address the challenges identified during this process and the impact of these developments on its operational integrity.
