San Diego, California

More than a dozen alleged members of a Guatemalan drug trafficking ring have been indicted in San Diego, as details of the indictment were unsealed on a Friday. Originally returned in 2019, the indictment has gained renewed attention following the fatal shooting of the lead defendant, Baldemar Calderon-Carrillo, in Mexico. This trafficking operation, based near the Guatemala-Mexico border, is accused of transporting significant quantities of cocaine into the United States.

Baldemar Calderon-Carrillo, also known by his alias “Don Valde,” was reportedly a key figure in the Chiapas-Guatemala Cartel, an offshoot of the notorious Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion. Calderon-Carrillo was killed during a violent shootout with Mexican authorities on June 8, 2025, in Chiapas. This altercation lasted approximately two hours, involving gunfire exchanges between Calderon-Carrillo’s associates and the Immediate Reaction Force Pakal, a Mexican law enforcement unit. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is currently working to verify the specifics surrounding his death.

Two of Calderon-Carrillo’s sons, Walfre Donaldo Calderon-Calderon, known as “El Teniente Jr.”, and Edgar Yovani Calderon-Calderon, also known as “Panon,” are among those indicted. In 2023, Edgar Yovani was arrested in France and subsequently pleaded guilty to charges relating to the international cocaine distribution conspiracy linked to the trafficking operation. His plea revealed that this organization was responsible for transporting over 550 kilograms of cocaine. He was sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison last month.

Most of the additional defendants listed in the indictment are currently fugitives, complicating ongoing law enforcement efforts. All individuals charged face serious accusations under international cocaine distribution conspiracy charges, which carry potential sentences of life imprisonment and fines that could reach up to $10 million.

Furthermore, Walfre Donaldo Calderon-Calderon faces extra implications for conspiracy to possess cocaine with intent to distribute, which also carries severe penalties, potentially including life imprisonment alongside similar fines. The recent developments surrounding this indictment highlight the continued efforts of law enforcement to dismantle significant drug trafficking organizations operating across borders.

Background of the Drug Trafficking Operation

The trafficking ring under investigation is based close to the Guatemala-Mexico border and has been implicated in the smuggling of large volumes of cocaine into the United States. Drug trafficking continues to be a critical issue in the region, with various organizations vying for control over key trafficking routes. The involvement of Calderon-Carrillo in establishing the Chiapas-Guatemala Cartel signals the presence of increasingly sophisticated and organized criminal operations.

The Chiapas-Guatemala Cartel’s connection to the larger Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion reflects a trend in the drug trade where smaller groups align with established cartels to enhance their operations and reach. The recent indictments serve not only to hold those accountable for their actions but also as a reminder of the persistent challenges faced by law enforcement in combating drug-related crimes.

Authorities emphasize the importance of international cooperation in addressing these complex drug trafficking networks that span multiple countries. The high-profile nature of the indictments illustrates the U.S. legal system’s commitment to pursuing justice against those who contribute to the drug crisis impacting both domestic and international communities.
