The San Diego Police Foundation organized an “Inside SDPD” event on Saturday at Police Plaza in Kearny Mesa, aimed at enhancing community trust and understanding of law enforcement. This interactive event allowed participants to engage in various police scenarios and learn about the daily operations of the San Diego Police Department (SDPD).
During the event, attendees had the opportunity to experience firsthand several realistic police scenarios, which included vehicle stops and a taser instruction station. Each scenario featured police officers who outlined the equipment utilized and the specific situations being addressed, introducing participants to the complexity of police decision-making.
Officer Joshua Hodge, a training coordinator for the SDPD, highlighted the significance of community education on police work. The hands-on experiences allowed participants to practice the use of taser blanks on targets and call in the K9 unit for demonstrations. One of the highlights of the event was a use-of-force presentation led by Sergeant Mike Rhoten. One of the volunteers, Shane Luther, expressed a strong interest in becoming a police officer in the future and recognized the transparency efforts made by SDPD to engage with the community effectively.
