The Times of San Diego announced its expansion by integrating seven community newspapers to improve hyperlocal news delivery in San Diego County. This initiative aims to enhance local reporting capabilities and provide residents with an enriched range of news relevant to their neighborhoods. The community newspapers will maintain their brand identity while being accessible through the Times of San Diego’s platform, ensuring a diverse range of stories reflecting local interests and concerns.
San Diego – The Times of San Diego has announced an expansion of its coverage by integrating seven community newspapers into its reporting framework, aiming to enhance hyperlocal news delivery across San Diego County. This significant initiative is set to increase local reporting capabilities while providing residents with a broader array of information relevant to their neighborhoods.
The seven newspapers being incorporated include the La Jolla Village News, Beach & Bay Press, Peninsula Beacon, Uptown News, Downtown News, Mission Times Courier, and La Mesa Courier. These publications focus on diverse geographical areas such as downtown/midtown San Diego, La Jolla, La Mesa, Mt. Helix, Mission Valley, Pacific Beach, Point Loma, and the San Diego State University vicinity. The integration process is directed by NEWSWELL, a nonprofit organization committed to supporting local journalism.
The merger has been described as a “natural fit,” reflecting nearly 40 years of collective experience in serving the San Diego community. As part of this expansion, coverage from the seven new newspapers will be available on the Times of San Diego homepage, its daily newsletter, as well as through seven newly launched community-centric newsletters. These new avenues are designed to make local news more accessible to residents, allowing them to stay informed about happenings in their respective neighborhoods.
Although the community newspapers are now part of the Times of San Diego framework, they will continue to maintain their established brand names and will be printed and distributed as usual. This decision aims to retain the identity and reliability that local readers have come to trust while enabling a broader reach through the Times of San Diego’s platform.
Chris Jennewein, the founder of Times of San Diego, emphasized that the integration of these additional resources will enhance local reporting while simultaneously preserving coverage of metro and state news. The move aligns with recent findings from a 2024 study conducted by the American Journalism Project, which signaled a strong community demand for more localized news and information.
Additionally, the expansion brings opportunities for advertisers and sponsors, allowing them to reach a more extensive audience through a combination of printed newspapers, hyperlocal websites, and neighborhood newsletters. This coordinated effort will be managed by the Number Six agency, which specializes in optimizing local advertising strategies.
As a nonprofit organization, Times of San Diego operates on a nonpartisan basis and has recently been awarded a two-year grant amounting to $300,000 from the Prebys Foundation. This funding is designated for bolstering coverage in local news, reinforcing the commitment of both organizations to serve the San Diego community effectively.
