San Diego, CA – Five standout players from the San Diego State University softball team have been recognized for their accomplishments both on the field and in the classroom by being named to the 2025 Academic All-District Team by the College Sports Communicators (CSC). The announcement was made on Wednesday, further highlighting the program’s commitment to excellence in athletics and academics.
The student-athletes selected include Shannon Cunningham, Cali Decker, Julie Holcomb, Jazmin Williams, and Angie Yellen. The Academic All-District Teams acknowledge the top student-athletes across the United States and Canada who have excelled in both their sport and academic endeavors. Those named to the Academic All-District Team have the opportunity to advance to the CSC Academic All-America Team ballot, with selections for All-America honors set to be announced next month.
To qualify for the Academic All-District Team selection, athletes must be either starters or significant reserves, demonstrating high participation levels in games. Additionally, they must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 on a 4.0 scale.
This recognition marks a significant achievement for San Diego State softball, as it is only the second time in the program’s history that multiple players have made the Academic All-District Team in the same year. Last season, four Aztecs, including Decker and Yellen, along with Makena Brocki and Alyssa Garcia, received this honor. Historical context reveals that only six San Diego State Aztecs had been selected for the Academic All-District Team prior to this year.
Both Decker and Yellen have distinguished themselves as some of the few SDSU student-athletes to achieve All-District recognition multiple times. Decker, who is majoring in communications, boasts an impressive GPA of 3.71 in her final semester. In addition to her academic success, she was also named to the Third Team All-West Region by the NFCA for her exceptional performance on the field, achieving a batting average of .358 with 16 doubles, one triple, five home runs, 40 RBIs, and 22 runs during her participation in all 57 games.
Holcomb, a kinesiology major with a 3.72 GPA, started 48 of the 56 games this past season and led the team with a .370 batting average. Her season statistics also include three triples, 17 RBIs, 21 runs scored, and 12 stolen bases, showcasing her vital contribution to the team’s success.
Williams, who transferred from Cal State Fullerton, maintained a GPA of 3.68 while playing in 56 games. She achieved a .283 batting average with an .815 OPS, scoring 30 runs and recording 28 RBIs, highlighting her effectiveness as a player.
Yellen, majoring in political science, recorded a cumulative GPA of 3.81 and started all of the 54 games she participated in. She accumulated a batting average of .294 with three home runs, six doubles, and 23 RBIs, underlining her overall impact on the team.
As 2025 approaches, Decker is aiming to join former Aztec Samantha Camello as the only SDSU players to be recognized as CSC Academic All-Americans. This ambition reflects the ongoing commitment of the San Diego State softball team to excel not only in competition but also in academic achievement, fostering well-rounded student-athletes.
