The University of Michigan women’s track and field team is set to compete at the NCAA East Region First Round on May 29 and May 31 in Jacksonville, Florida. The event is held at Visit Jax Track and hosted by the University of North Florida, showcasing some of the nation’s top collegiate athletes.

Thirteen Wolverines will represent the university across ten individual events and one relay. The athletes include notable participants such as Stephanie Bertram (800-meter run), Iliana Downing (pole vault), Trinity Franklin (shot put), and more. The complete list of athletes set to compete is:

  • Stephanie Bertram – 800-meter run
  • Iliana Downing – pole vault
  • Trinity Franklin – shot put
  • Sidney Green – 400-meter hurdles, 4×400-meter relay
  • Mary Caroline Heinen – 5,000-meter run, 10,000-meter run
  • Gabriella Newman – high jump
  • Noelani Phillips – 4×400-meter relay
  • Kourtney Rathke – pole vault
  • Abigail Russell – shot put, discus
  • Payton Smith – 400-meter dash, 4×400-meter relay
  • Savannah Sutherland – 400-meter hurdles, 4×400-meter relay
  • Elizabeth Tapper – shot put
  • Emma Yungeberg – javelin throw

During the event, twelve competitors from each individual event and twelve teams from each relay will advance to the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships scheduled for June 11-14 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Recent Performance at Big Ten Outdoor Championships

Prior to the regional meet, the University of Michigan women’s track and field team placed ninth in the Big Ten Outdoor Championships. The team demonstrated noteworthy performances, achieving two event records and claiming four medals. Savannah Sutherland secured her third consecutive title in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.37 seconds. Teammate Sidney Green finished closely behind, taking second place with a time of 57.47 seconds.

Additionally, Elizabeth Tapper achieved a silver medal in the shot put with a personal best throw of 17.65 meters (57-11), setting a new program record. Emma Yungeberg also excelled, finishing fourth in the javelin throw with a personal-best mark of 53.08 meters (191-6), contributing to the team’s record-breaking performances.

Relay Success

The 4×400-meter relay team, which included Payton Smith, Savannah Sutherland, Sidney Green, and Trinity Henderson, secured a bronze medal with an overall time of 3:32.47, triumphing over UCLA by 0.52 seconds.

Upcoming Competition Schedule

The NCAA East Region First Round will commence on May 29, with field events starting with the javelin throw at 2:30 PM. Competition on May 31 will kick off with the discus throw at 1 PM. Coverage will be available on ESPN+ on both competition days, allowing fans to follow the performances of the Wolverines as they strive to advance to the championship meet.

This year’s competition presents a crucial opportunity for the Michigan women’s track and field team to continue their strong performances and vie for a chance at national recognition.
