San Diego State University’s Peyton Rodgers has been recognized as Mountain West Freshman of the Week following impressive performances against Washington State. This marks his first career conference award, contributing to the Aztecs’ success and their upcoming participation in the Mountain West Championship. Rodgers showcased his skills with notable statistics, including a record of 2-2 and 50 strikeouts this season. The Aztecs are poised to compete against UNLV in the championship as they look to capitalize on their strong season.

San Diego – San Diego State University pitcher Peyton Rodgers has been named Mountain West Freshman of the Week, following outstanding performances during a home series sweep against Washington State from May 15 to May 17. The announcement was made by the league office in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Rodgers made significant contributions to the Aztecs’ successful campaign, helping the team secure a berth in the upcoming Mountain West Championship. This recognition marks the first career conference award for Rodgers, who has emerged as a key player among his peers this season.

This season, San Diego State has had a notable track record, with a total of three players receiving conference honors. Previously, Daniel Arambula was named MW Freshman of the Week on March 17, and Omar Serrano earned MW Pitcher of the Week on April 19.

Rodgers’ Performance Highlights

In his recent outings against Washington State, Peyton Rodgers recorded one victory and one save. Across two appearances, he showcased his pitching prowess by allowing only two hits and no walks, while striking out six batters through five scoreless innings. During the opener of the series on May 15, Rodgers pitched for four innings without giving up a run, contributing to a narrow 3-2 victory for the Aztecs. He effectively kept potential scoring threats at bay by stranding a runner at first base in the eighth inning and successfully catching another runner stealing in the ninth.

In the series finale on May 17, Rodgers was equally impressive. He entered the game and retired the side in order, recording his fourth save of the season in a high-scoring 12-10 win. Demonstrating his efficiency, Rodgers completed the final game with just nine pitches, striking out the first two batters faced and inducing a pop-out to end the contest.

Season Statistics

Currently, Peyton Rodgers boasts a season record of 2-2 with an earned run average (ERA) of 4.62. His contributions this season have placed him as a standout in the conference. Rodgers leads the Mountain West with 30 pitching appearances, which ranks fourth nationally. He has amassed a total of 50 strikeouts, positioning him fifth in the Mountain West—24 of those strikeouts were batters called out looking. Additionally, he is ranked seventh in the conference with four saves.

Background Information

Rodgers is a native of Solana Beach, California, and is an alumnus of Torrey Pines High School. His impressive performances have not only earned him individual accolades, but have also played a crucial role in leading the Aztecs to a competitive position in the Mountain West conference.

Looking ahead, the Aztecs, currently seeded fifth, are slated to open the Mountain West Championship against the fourth seed, UNLV, on May 21 at Sloan Park in Mesa, Arizona. This championship is expected to be a defining moment for Rodgers and his teammates, as they aim to build on their success from the regular season.
