This substantial amount consists of refunds and vendor payments that have not been cashed or were returned due to address changes. Residents are reminded that the deadline for claims to the City is June 16. Any unclaimed funds will revert to the City’s General Fund on July 1.
Currently, there are checks waiting to be claimed with amounts ranging from $1 to $28,000. A check is classified as unclaimed if it has not been cashed within six months after it was issued. Last year, the City successfully returned approximately $888,059 to 118 recipients, which constitutes just 53% of the total unclaimed amount available at that time, with an average claim value of $6,041.
To initiate a claim, individuals need to complete the Unclaimed Monies Form, which must be sent to the City of San Diego’s Department of Finance. The City’s Unclaimed Monies Report is updated quarterly, and this information is available to the public at no cost. Residents are encouraged to check for unclaimed funds through the City’s website at sandiego.gov/finance/unclaimed.
In parallel with the City’s efforts, the San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office also has $867,171 in unclaimed funds available to residents, with a deadline for claims set for September 22. The smallest unclaimed amount with the County is $15, while the largest is $25,118.40. For county funds, residents should follow the guidance provided on the County’s website or reach out via email at refunds@sdcounty.ca.gov to obtain assistance with the claims process. According to state law, any funds that are not claimed revert to the county’s general fund after several years.
City and County officials emphasize the importance of these unclaimed funds, stating that they may significantly help residents facing financial challenges. Outreach efforts aim to ensure that individuals and businesses have the opportunity to reclaim their missing funds before the set deadlines. Supervisor Joel Anderson from the County has stated his dedication to helping constituents navigate the claims process, ensuring that eligible residents are aware of their potential entitlements.
