San Diego’s culinary scene receives a significant boost as four new restaurants are added to the Michelin Guide California. Newly recognized establishments include Atelier Manna, 24 Suns, Lilo, and Tanner’s Prime Burgers, showcasing the city’s commitment to quality and innovative dining experiences. This recognition follows a challenging year for local eateries, reinforcing the vibrant and evolving food culture in San Diego as the culinary scene continues to thrive.
San Diego has added four restaurants to the prestigious Michelin Guide for California, showcasing the city’s burgeoning culinary scene. The newly recommended establishments are Atelier Manna in Encinitas, 24 Suns in Oceanside, Lilo in Carlsbad, and Tanner’s Prime Burgers, also located in Oceanside. These additions form part of a broader recognition of 13 restaurants across California that have received the Michelin Guide’s “recommended” designation.
Atelier Manna stands out with its hipster haven ambiance, characterized by a dining area that features recycled and upcycled materials. Operated by married couple Andrew and Larah Bachelier, the restaurant prides itself on sustainability and local sourcing. Signature dishes include locally caught halibut served with sudachi and a unique coconut leche de tigre, alongside a grilled pork rack from Salmon Creek Farms finished with a pomegranate-infused jus.
Continuing the trend of innovation, 24 Suns offers a contemporary take on Chinese cuisine, blending fine dining with a welcoming atmosphere. Under the guidance of chefs Nic Webber and Jacob Jordan, who both possess extensive backgrounds in fine dining, the restaurant serves a variety of rotating seasonal snacks and flavorful dumplings. Among its notable offerings are jiaozi filled with shrimp and drenched in butter sauce, complemented by a dessert of butterscotch black sesame budino.
Tanner’s Prime Burgers, a unique entry into the Michelin Guide, focuses on smash-style burgers made from single-source USDA prime beef. Chef Brandon Rogers, who previously honed his skills in fine dining, elevates the traditional burger experience with gourmet toppings that include melted American cheese, crispy bacon, and caramelized onions. To enhance texture, the restaurant’s fries are twice-fried in beef tallow, offering customers a satisfying crunch. Desserts like Dutch chocolate milkshakes and vanilla tallow ice cream sandwiches further capture diners’ attention.
Lilo, which opened its doors on April 17, 2024, focuses on a coastal California menu highlighting seafood and local ingredients. Under the expertise of Chef Eric Bost, guests can relish dishes such as dry-aged Japanese kin medai and a decadent 40-day dry-aged beef ribeye, both crafted to deliver gourmet flavors and culinary precision.
The California Michelin Guide Ceremony, set for June 25, 2025, will determine if any of these newly recognized restaurants will receive a Bib Gourmand or coveted Michelin Star. The inclusion of these four local eateries is particularly significant, as it comes on the heels of a prior year where San Diego restaurants faced losses in Michelin honors, making this recognition a pivotal moment for the city’s dining establishments.
