The San Diego State men’s golf team ended the first day of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional in 11th place with a score of 6-over-par 294. They trail USC by one stroke and Michigan State by two. Senior Justin Hastings leads the team, tied for 16th individually at 1-under-par 71. Florida State holds the lead in the tournament at 14-under-par 274. The Aztecs aim to improve their standing in the upcoming rounds to secure a spot in the NCAA Championships.
Tallahassee, Florida – The San Diego State men’s golf team is currently tied for 11th place after the first day of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional. The Aztecs finished the day with a team score of 6-over-par 294 on the par-72, 7,520-yard Seminole Legacy Golf Club. This puts them one stroke behind USC at +5 and two strokes behind Michigan State at +4.
Leading the tournament is No. 11 Florida State, which posted a remarkable score of 14-under-par 274. They are followed by Notre Dame in second place at -7 and No. 3 Ole Miss in third at -6. Tied for fourth are New Mexico and Augusta, both sitting at -3.
In terms of individual performances, senior Justin Hastings has emerged as the top performer for SDSU, finishing the day with a score of 1-under-par 71, currently tied for 16th out of 75 players in the field. Hastings had a commendable front nine, shooting a 3-under-par 33, but faced challenges on the back nine with a score of 38.
Junior Tyler Kowack also had a solid outing, tying for 25th with an even-par 72 that included three birdies and three bogeys. Freshman Harry Takis is tied for 33rd at +1, achieving one birdie, two bogeys, and 15 pars throughout his round. Sophomore Nathan Sampson is struggling, however, and is tied for 67th at +6, hampered by a tough final ten holes. Sophomore Dylan Oyama managed to shoot an 81 (+9) and is currently tied for 73rd.
Florida State’s Luke Clanton leads the individual leaderboard with an impressive score of 6-under-par, closely followed by Jacob Modleski and Buck Brumlow at -5.
The tournament format allows for the top five teams and the lowest individual not already on those teams to advance to the NCAA Championships, scheduled to be held from May 22-28 in Carlsbad, California.
The SDSU men’s golf team will return to action with their second round on Tuesday, May 12, where they will tee off from the 10th hole beginning at 8:55 a.m. ET (5:55 a.m. PT).
The performance of the Aztecs in the upcoming rounds will be crucial, as they strive to improve their standing and aim for a spot in the NCAA Championships.
