This defeat drops SDSU to 16-37 overall, placing them under pressure as they head into a critical series against Washington State. Nevada, now 31-20 overall, claims first place in the Mountain West standings and looks strong heading into the final stretch of the season. Key performances included a significant third-inning offensive surge for Nevada and a standout effort by SDSU’s Nevan Noonan.
Reno, Nevada – The San Diego State Aztecs faced a disappointing finale to their Mountain West series against the Nevada Wolf Pack, losing 11-1 on Sunday at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park. The defeat concluded the series with SDSU’s overall record dropping to 16-37 and 11-16 in Mountain West conference play. Following this loss, the Aztecs find themselves tied for seventh place in the conference standings alongside Washington State.
As the regular season approaches its conclusion, only six teams from the Mountain West qualify for the upcoming championship in Mesa, Arizona. SDSU’s position has put pressure on them as they prepare for a crucial three-game series against Washington State next weekend. This series could be pivotal for their postseason hopes.
On the other hand, Nevada improved its overall record to 31-20, while holding a strong 17-10 within the Mountain West, allowing the Wolf Pack to gain sole possession of first place in the conference. They are now in a favorable position heading into the final stretch of the season, ahead of Fresno State and New Mexico, who are tied for second place. UNLV is positioned behind them, followed closely by Air Force and San José State, both tied for fifth.
The game was marked by a significant offensive surge from Nevada, particularly in the third inning. The Wolf Pack sent 12 batters to the plate during that inning, scoring seven runs on seven hits. This outburst was highlighted by a double from Jake Harvey, which drove in two runs and helped escalate Nevada’s lead.
For SDSU, Nevan Noonan stood out offensively, going 3-for-3 at the plate. His impressive performance included a two-out single in the first inning, setting up the only run for the Aztecs, which was a double by CJ Moran that drove in a run after Noonan’s successful advance on a stolen base.
Casey Burfield of Nevada pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and striking out four, securing the win for his team. In contrast, SDSU’s Garvey Rumary was charged with the loss after 2.2 innings on the mound, failing to contain Nevada’s offensive onslaught.
As the game progressed, Nevada continued to build its lead with additions from Taylor Holder and Jacob Doyle, who each contributed with two-run batted in as well as solo home runs in the fourth and seventh innings. The match concluded in the seventh inning due to the run rule when Sean Yamaguchi’s single brought in two additional runs for the Wolf Pack, solidifying their victory.
Next weekend, SDSU will honor its 2025 senior class with a special ceremony before their home series against Washington State. The Aztecs will need strong performances to keep their hopes for a Mountain West Championship alive and to build momentum heading into the final games of the regular season.
