San Diego is set to host the 46th annual Aztec Invitational this weekend at SDSU Sports Deck. This two-day track and field event will feature a mix of collegiate and professional athletes, promising exciting competitions in various events. Viewers can catch the action live via streaming, while San Diego State will showcase its talented student-athletes. The event is not only a celebration of athletics but also an opportunity for fans to support their local teams.
Sunny San Diego is buzzing with anticipation as the city prepares to host the 46th annual Aztec Invitational this weekend at the SDSU Sports Deck. Kicking off on Friday, the two-day event promises to be an action-packed showcase of athletic talent with teams from far and wide converging for friendly competition.
The exciting meet will begin with distance events on Friday afternoon at SDSU Sports Deck, while the hammer throw is set to take place over at UC San Diego. If you’re a fan of track and field, this is definitely the place to be!
Saturday continues the fun as track races and field events ramp up at the SDSU Sports Deck. With a variety of participating teams including San Diego State, Washington State, Brigham Young, Army West Point, San Diego, and UC San Diego, fans can look forward to an exciting mix of athletes competing for glory.
Additionally, this year’s Invitational also welcomes teams from Cal State San Marcos and Point Loma Nazarene (Division II), alongside Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Middlebury (Division III). Noteworthy is the participation of numerous unattached athletes, professional competitors, and elite Paralympians, making for a rich and diverse event.
Can’t make it to the venue? No worries! Viewers can tune in to the action as events will be streamed live on the RunnerSpace+ platform for a nominal fee. For those following along at home, live results will also be available at GoAztecs.com.
Our very own San Diego State will have 27 student-athletes competing across a whopping 44 entries over the two days. The entry list is packed with excitement, featuring 19 sprints, 10 mid-distance events, four distance events, four pole vaulters, two throwers, one hurdler, one jumper, and three relays. It’s an all-hands-on-deck weekend for Aztec fans!
This event marks the first of two home meets for SDSU this season. The second meet, the Shelia Burrell Aztec Heptathlon/Decathlon, will follow soon on March 27-28. Before the Invitational, our Aztecs showcased their strength at the Ben Brown Invitational on March 7, in Fullerton, California. Recent standout performances at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia by Jenna Fee Feyerabend and Shaquena Foote keep the team’s spirits high!
The weekend kicks off on Friday with Kiera Bennett leading the charge in the hammer throw at 2 p.m. PT. Following that, Samantha Wood will step up to tackle the steeplechase at 5:30 p.m. PT. As the sun sets, fans can cheer on three Aztecs in the 5k, scheduled for 7:35 p.m. PT. Talk about an electrifying start!
Saturday will launch bright and early at 11:30 a.m. PT with the 4×100-meter relay, wrapping up a thrilling day with the 4×400-meter relay at 6:05 p.m. PT. Athletes to keep an eye on include Pavana Nagaraj, who is competing in her first collegiate heptathlon, currently sitting in eighth place after four events. Samantha Wood recorded the third-fastest 3,000-meter steeplechase time in program history at an impressive 10:45.66, while Lauren Harper and Sophia Wolf each achieved remarkable 1,500-meter times of 4:22.26 and 4:26.25 respectively.
With competitors like Vanessa Cabello and Maddie Heller placing sixth and seventh in the 5,000 meters, along with fellow athlete Presley Bennett tackling the same event, the excitement at the Aztec Invitational is truly palpable.
