Winter Storm Closes Schools in San Diego County

News Summary

A winter storm hit San Diego County, causing multiple school closures as safety concerns took precedence over regular schedules. Several districts, including Julian Union and Mountain Empire, closed their doors in response to severe weather warnings, including heavy snowfall and strong winds. Local authorities advised residents to prepare for difficult travel conditions amid fluctuating weather patterns.

Winter Storm Closes Schools in San Diego County

Residents of beautiful San Diego County woke up to a roar of wind and fluffy white flakes as winter storm conditions swept across the region, prompting several school closures. Safety first is the mantra of the San Diego County Office of Education, and in light of severe weather, it made the call to close schools this past Friday.

Schools Affected by the Winter Chill

The list of schools that closed their doors for the day included the Julian Union School District, Julian Union High School District, Mountain Empire Unified School District, and Spencer Valley School District. With a flurry of flakes and strong winds, it’s no wonder that school officials decided to err on the side of caution to protect both students and staff.

Weather Warnings in Effect

As the snow began to fall, a winter weather advisory was issued from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, specifically targeting the county’s mountainous regions. Folks living there can expect a mix of fun and chaos as wet snow piles up. According to the National Weather Service, those lucky enough to be above 4,500 feet could see anywhere from two to four inches of snow. Remember, if you’re traveling in the mountains, it’s wise to be cautious! Wind gusts hitting up to 60 mph could make matters even more interesting.

Recent Closures Due to Power Safety Measures

This isn’t the first time schools have had to close their doors recently. Just a couple of days earlier, on December 11, several schools, including Pauma Elementary School and Barona Indian Charter School, had their schedules disrupted due to public safety power shutoffs. San Diego Gas & Electric implemented these shutoffs to lower the risk of wildfires during extreme weather conditions. Interestingly, Vivian Banks Charter School remained open amid those closures, showcasing the varied impact on our school communities.

Looking to the Future

It seems that winter storms have made themselves a bit too cozy in San Diego, as another school closure hit the Mountain Empire Unified School District and Spencer Valley School District on March 7, 2025. Just like before, the winter weather advisory warned of challenging travel conditions and the risk of falling trees due to heavy snow. This time around, it was forecasted that up to two inches of snow could add to difficulties across the area. Motorists in the mountains were urged to use extra caution during these unpredictable road conditions.

Community Preparedness is Key

With all this fluctuating weather, communities across San Diego County are encouraged to stay informed and prepare for unexpected closures and disruptions. The safety of our kids is a priority, and parents should arm themselves with the latest weather updates and school announcements.

So grab your hot cocoa, cozy up by the fireplace, and enjoy the winter wonderland that San Diego County transforms into during these storms. And, remember, if you’re heading out, take it slow and easy on those roads!
