Residents of beautiful San Diego County woke up to a roar of wind and fluffy white flakes as winter storm conditions swept across the region, prompting several school closures. Safety first is the mantra of the San Diego County Office of Education, and in light of severe weather, it made the call to close schools this past Friday.
The list of schools that closed their doors for the day included the Julian Union School District, Julian Union High School District, Mountain Empire Unified School District, and Spencer Valley School District. With a flurry of flakes and strong winds, it’s no wonder that school officials decided to err on the side of caution to protect both students and staff.
As the snow began to fall, a winter weather advisory was issued from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, specifically targeting the county’s mountainous regions. According to the National Weather Service, those lucky enough to be above 4,500 feet could see anywhere from two to four inches of snow. Just a couple of days earlier, on December 11, several schools, including Pauma Elementary School and Barona Indian Charter School, had their schedules disrupted due to public safety power shutoffs. San Diego Gas & Electric implemented these shutoffs to lower the risk of wildfires during extreme weather conditions. Interestingly, Vivian Banks Charter School remained open amid those closures, showcasing the varied impact on our school communities.
It seems that winter storms have made themselves a bit too cozy in San Diego, as another school closure hit the Mountain Empire Unified School District and Spencer Valley School District on March 7, 2025. Just like before, the winter weather advisory warned of challenging travel conditions and the risk of falling trees due to heavy snow. This time around, it was forecasted that up to two inches of snow could add to difficulties across the area. Motorists in the mountains were urged to use extra caution during these unpredictable road conditions.
